Over More Than Three And A Half Centuries Of Tea Cultivation History, The Island Of Taiwan Has Been One Of The Best, If Not The Best Producer Of Fine, High-Mountain Grown Oolong Teas.
By Happy Accident, Taiwan’s Mountainous Topography, Its Location - Crossed By The Tropic Of Cancer - Its Good Fertile Earth, The Abundance Of Sweet Rainfall And Clear Sunshine, Plus Of Course The Loving Care Of The Tea Farmers Themselves; Have Made Fine Oolong Tea A National Treasure, And One Of Taiwan’s Most Famous And Valuable Assets.
But There Are Shadows In The Tea Gardens Of Taiwan. In Recent Years, Many Of The Old Skills And Ancient Methods Of Producing The Finest High Mountain Oolong Teas Have Been Lost As The Old Masters Passed Away, Or Perhaps Due To Economic Pressures To Produce Quantity Rather Than Quality. Conversely, And To My Delight There Is Still A Very Small And Select Body Of Tea Masters, Myself Among Them, Who Are Dedicated To Upholding The Old Ways And Maintaining Standards Needed To Produce The Very Best High Mountain Fine Oolong Teas.
The Nose Of Fine Taiwan Oolong Tea Is Very Distinct And Aromatic, And The Nose Of The Very Highest Quality Oolong Tea Is Without Comparison. But This Can Only Be Experienced After The Tea Is Brewed. So To Try To Set Taiwan’s Wonderful Oolong Teas Apart From All Others, I Decided To Make A New Presentation So That Anyone, From A Simple Tea Lover, To An Acknowledged Expert, Could Tell At A Glance That What They Were Looking At Was A Fine Oolong Tea From Taiwan. I Wanted Something Really Memorable; Something That In One Hundred Years’ Time Would Be Well Known As The Embodiment And Soul Of The Very Finest Tea Of Taiwan.
After A Lot Of Thought And Many Abandoned Ideas, I Began To Consider The Example Of The Famous “Pu-Er” Tea From China That Is Pressed Into Shallow Discs For Preservation And Even For Display. I Wondered If Possibly This Method Might Be Adapted In A Different Form, And So I Began To Investigate Possibility Of The Tuan Yuan A Very High Quality Family Of Teas Formed Into A Beautiful Round Cabochons.
Many Years Of Invention, Adaptation, And Relentless Refinement Allowed Me To Develop A Method To Produce A Stable And High Quality, Long Lived Oolong Tea Cabochon. Observing The Wonderful Rounded Shape, Understanding That The Preservation Is Superior, And Most Of All Knowing Of The Quality And The Taste That Would Be Released When The Tea Was Brewed, I Felt That I Had Finally Reached My Goal, So Then And Only Then, My Dream Of “Tuan Yuan” Tea Was Born.
